Indiana Golf Course Review
Chariot Run is a world class links design that can be enjoyed by players of all abilities. At 7169 yards/138 slope from the championship tees, this course is a formidable challenge for the scratch golfer. Alternate sets (6634 yards/128 slope, 6087 yards/122 slope and 5108 yards/124 slope) afford average and beginning players an opportunity to choose a distance that suites their game. All players will appreciate the upscale atmosphere that can be experienced for extraordinarily reasonable rates.
The beautiful clubhouse rests between the 18th hole and the practice green that is situated adjacent, and features a snack bar/lounge, pro shop and locker rooms with showers for men and women. Chariot Run is the former golf course of the Horseshoe Southern Indiana casino property, and as of October 2017 is owned and operated by VICI Properties Inc.
There is a spacious grass range and the course is well marked with permanent yardage indicators posted on the cart paths and also on the fairways. Sprinkler heads are measured to the center of the green, and pin placements are indicated by plus/minus diagram sheets on the golf carts. As evidenced in the above photos, this is a links style layout with wide rolling fairways that are often dotted with sand bunkers, and bordered by water on 8 holes. Number 5 is a particularly tricky hole, as a stream cuts diagonally from left to right just in front of the green, creating the need for accuracy on the approach. The ninth also features a burn that meanders along the right side of the playing surface, from tee to green.
Most golfers will be able to find the fairways off the tee, and those shots that wander may find the short grass on adjacent holes. Except for 4 tree lined holes, the landing areas are quite open, with green complexes that feature understated swales and mounding. Recoveries from slightly off-line approaches are often simple, and the putting surfaces themselves are quick, of high quality and only mildly undulating. Wind is often a factor here, as there is no natural shield of hills or trees on course. The water holes become much more difficult when the wind is blowing across or towards the golfer.
A round of golf on Chariot Run is highly recommended by this website. The design is a pleasant contrast to many of the tree lined layouts that are often found in this area. Under normal conditions, golfers can expect a fun and challenging round - on a course that plays fair - with good scores possible. The conditioning from tee to green - even on our early April visit - was outstanding. Formerly the golf course of the Horseshoe Southern Indiana casino property, Chariot Run offers wonderful amenities, plus Indiana's largest casino is only 15 minutes away. From French Lick, expect a drive that will take approximately 1 ½ hours – definitely worth it!
