GREY GOOSE GOLF CLUB (260-724-4512)
Indiana Golf Course Review 10/07/06
Grey Goose Golf Club in Decatur, just south of Ft Wayne, is a 6,447 yard championship course built in the shadows a large nature preserve with long abandoned clay mines. Lakes and wetlands come into play on 15 holes creating a terrain that more resembles South Carolina, rather than Indiana farmland.
There also are 36 soft sand bunkers situated greenside or near the landing zones on the mildly rolling fairways, which are designed to present a nice mix of open and tree lined playing areas. Golfers will encounter ample room off the tee and sufficient room greenside for up and down recoveries on the medium sized, mildly undulating putting surfaces.
There are four sets of tee boxes that play to distances and slopes that measure 6447 yards/133 slope, 6253 yards/132 slope for men and 140 for women, 5383 yards/125 slope for men and 128 for women, and 4786 yards with a slope of 119 for men and 123 for ladies playing from the forward tees. The significant water hazards and strategic bunkering make for an interesting round - that demands the best from golfers of all skill levels.
On property is a USGA regulation practice facility that encompasses over 12.5 acres with a 25 station range providing 5 target greens, two bent grass putting greens plus a short game area with sand bunker. The clubhouse includes a pro shop, changing rooms with showers fro men and women, a snack area serving drinks and sandwiches, plus a banquet hall and restaurant that has a casual yet elegant atmosphere.
On course golfers will find the Kirby marking system in place, with yardage blocks on the fairways every 25 yards from 200 to 75 yards (250 on par fives). Color coded flags indicate front, middle and back pin placements on the greens, which are usually sloped from back to front. There also are hole diagram booklets mounted on each cart.
There are some forced carries over wetlands and natural areas, both off the tee and on approaches. However, those playing from the two forward tees get a significant break from these hazards. This course presents an enjoyable experience for all. For more info, visit our page for the course, with direct link to their website by clicking here.
